Martin Stadium to Display State-of-the-Art Scoreboard in 2008

Washington State University announced the addition of a state-of-the-art video, scoring and sound system at Martin Stadium in time for the 2008 Pullman opener against California, Sept. 6.

The state-of-the-art system features the latest Daktronics light emitting diode (LED) video technology with the capabilities to present live and recorded video images, colorful animation and vivid graphics with incredible brightness and wide angle visibility.

The video display will measure approximately 53 feet wide by 25 feet high, over double the size of the current video board, with pixels on 23 millimeter spacing. When not showing video, graphics, animation, stats, or out-of-town game scores, advertisers will be highlighted with a wide variety of visuals and messages.

"This is a tremendous addition to Martin Stadium and something our fans are really going to enjoy," said WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. "The new video board will rival anything in the Pac-10 and along with the Phase I and II renovations to Martin Stadium, Cougar fans will have a heightened gameday experience."

Above the video display will be a Daktronics custom LED scoreboard with programmable team name message centers, score, possession, down, to go, ball on, quarter and timeouts left. SportSound, a division of Daktronics, will design and install a new state-of-the-art sound cabinet on the large scoreboard display.

The integrated speaker module with digital sound processing will provide Washington State fans excellent sound projection, clear and intelligible speech and a powerful audio experience.  The entire video, scoring and sound display will be 53 feet wide and 41 feet high. Additional Daktronics equipment will include a delay of game clock, locker room clocks, and an auxiliary football scoreboard with game time and score.

Removal of the current scoreboard at Martin Stadium is set to begin in late June with the new video and scoreboard operational in time for the Sept. 6 game against Cal.

In conjunction to the new scoreboard, WSU has purchased a multi-media production trailer which will produce content for the Martin Stadium board. Additionally, the production trailer allows WSU to produce content from other athletic venues, including Beasley Coliseum, Lower Soccer Field and Bailey-Brayton Field, while also streaming the video live or over the internet.

"With these additions, WSU Athletics is really taking a step forward to bring live, original content to Cougar fans across the country," said Sterk.

Phase I of construction includes the development of restrooms and concessions at the east end of the stadium and new restroom facilities on the south concourse. In addition, a plaza will be developed as part of the east entrance and a new ticket office will be constructed in the east end as well. Phase II includes a widening of the north concourse, in conjunction with the development of new restroom and concession facilities. Both phases will be completed by the start of the 2008 football season.

WSU opens its 2008 season against Oklahoma State at the Cougar Gridiron Classic, Aug. 30, at Qwest Field in Seattle.

Phase III Update

On Friday, Feb. 1, the Washington State University Board of Regents met in Vancouver, Wash. During the meeting, the regents gave approval to begin the process of selecting a design-build team (constructors and architects) for Phase III of the Martin Stadium renovation.

Phase III of the project is budgeted at a maximum of $42 million and construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2009. It will add upper level premium seating to the north side of the stadium, which will include luxury suites, loge boxes and club seats, and will be funded through revenue bonds and donations.

Martin Stadium Renovation

The Martin Stadium Expansion and Renovation project began in December 2006. Some pedestrian access closures and parking restrictions were implemented for safety purposes. Please note these temporary closures and plan accordingly.

The parking areas along the north side concessions were closed as was parking in the southwest lot next to the CUB. The concourse used for pedestrian access under the north side stadium seating were closed as well. The Hollingbery Fieldhouse southeast corner door facing east toward Mooberry Track is no longer accessible. The stadium access road from Stadium Way between Mooberry Track and the northside stadium concessions and seating were closed.

Other additional closures will be necessary as the project progresses. Your patient understanding is appreciated.
